SierraFlowerFinder turns 20 this August!
Updated: Sep 13, 2019
On a quiet midsummer day in August of 1999, SierraFlowerFinder was brought into the world at Sierra Flower Trading, a large floral distribution company based out of Montreal, Quebec, in Canada.
It might not seem like it, but starting a website was actually a pretty crazy idea in the world of 1999. Websites? The internet was not even fully cooked yet!
This was, after all, the era of "times new roman", still years before wikipedia (2001), myspace (2003), Facebook (2004), Youtube (2005) and twitter (2006). Just to give you an idea of what the internet was like back then, in case you forgot, here are some throwbacks we bring to you through the magic of the Wayback Machine:
Necessity is the mother of invention
Sierra Flower Trading's little online "bundle of joy" came from trying to meet the needs of our quality control teams. Ever since the company was founded in 1986, the quality control department has always been front and center to daily operations, always opening up boxes to make sure the imported flowers were received according to a certain high standard for quality.
But in order to inspect boxes, compare varieties and properly evaluate quality & grading, the teams needed to assemble all kinds of information; pictures, grading, packing and handling information. With hundreds, and soon thousands of varieties to keep track of every week, they were overwhelmed with trying to categorize everything into binders and spreadsheets; the information was constantly getting lost or duplicated, and it was hard to share files with clients and farms... They tried everything. Finally in 1999, they realized the best way to compile everything was to host "flower profiles" online. SierraFlowerFinder was born.
It wasn't long before clients and farms also began using the online tool and soon everyone knew that we had an instant success on our hands!
Here are some awesome old skool SierraFlowerFinder pics:
Today, with well over 11 000 pictures and host to almost 7000 different flower variety profiles, SierraFlowerFinder continues to evolve, transform and innovate, and all of this is done FOR YOU. We really just want to share our passion and knowledge of flowers and foliages and make the floral industry a bit more informed and also a bit more fun too!
We really hope to be able to continue for another 20 years! Here's to the internet of 2039!!!
p.s: Keep an eye out in the coming weeks for some new features rolling out.
Have a great week everybody!
