Living Coral - Another look at the 2019 Pantone Color of the Year.... for Roses!

Updated: Jun 19, 2019

In December 2018, Pantone announced it's 2019 Color of the Year and a flurry of swirling press releases, editorials and spinoff projects engulfed the design and creative world to kick off the new year. But all these months later, we're standing right at the edge of wedding season and prom season and yet you wouldn't even know that coral was the color of the year; the momentum seems to have slowed down.

Despite that, in the floral world, it seems as though Coral is the hot ticket right now. In our last "Color Palette" post, the most clicked color by far was Coral, and so this week we're riding that wave and taking a deeper look at Living Coral - Pantone's 2019 color of the year!

Keep in mind, when we think CORAL, we tend to think Peach and Pink, but this Pantone color (LIVING CORAL 16-1546) is considered an ORANGE hue.... we just need to clarify that to avoid confusion in case you were expecting something pinker. In their words, Pantone described Living Coral as “an animated, life-affirming shade of orange, with golden undertones.”

The testing contest:

Which Roses & Flowers match the Living Coral tone the most?

There were a handful of random contenders for our Coral Roses Comparison; some were our picks, some were farm picks, but here is our random selection.

Amsterdam

Cherry Brandy

Coral Expression

Coral Reef

Fidji

Free Spirit

Kahala

Orange Crush

Orange Unique

Orangine

Sunset Glory

Wild Spirit

Results!

Keep in mind, this whole color contest is not only ridiculously subjective, but also, color tends to vary from farm to farm due to geographical factors such as elevation, latitude, and topographical features... not to mention the effects of the ever-changing weather and temperature. There are so many external variables which can affect color and size of Roses during production that entire books have been dedicated to the subject...

BUT THAT'S NO FUN... and this contest certainly is.

So we have whittled the list to our top 5.

Keep scrolling down to see our close up photo studies of these beauties!

Top 5 Coral Roses

  • Rose Peach Amsterdam

  • Rose Orange Crush

  • Rose Coral Reef

  • Rose Coral Expression

  • Rose Free Spirit

We did a side by side comparison of coral hued varieties to see which ones really fit the bill. Our findings? Most were too orange and too pale or peachy, but these 5 really came across as Coral to us.

While Rose Amsterdam came in shipped with a perfect hot peach coloration, vibrant and bright and by far the closest thing to Living Coral's Pantone color, we quickly realized that as the blooms hydrated and developed, the color transitioned into a medium pink and lost most of it's coral hue. Clearly it was still incredibly beautiful, but that color transition is a really important thing to keep in mind when planning events.

The exact opposite happened with Rose Orange Crush. It was shipped to us with closed blooms, like all roses, in a bright orange color. As the flower hydrated, we found it turning into a peachy salmon coral color, settling into a beautifully toned Hot Peach. In our opinion, though it is widely considered an Orange Rose, it was pretty darn close to matching the Pantone color.

Another winner for the truest coral color was Rose Coral Reef. Though it did not match the Living Coral Pantone color, lending itself to lighter and golder peach tones, we felt it was what would be most widely considered "Coral".

Ditto Rose Coral Expression; nice solid Coral color, lending itself to to pinkier tones and opening nice and wide into an interesting garden style frilly aperture. Very very nice.

Finally, though the colors in Rose Free Spirit are kind of all over the place (as the name would imply) one cannot discount the fact that the bloom and all of its colors as a whole SCREAM coral magic.
